Fishing is often viewed as a country sport, but a new book by a river restoration expert and fly-fisher has revealed 50 places in the UK where you can catch fish such as trout a short walk from a town or city centre High Street.
Theo Pike is chairman of the environmental charity the Wandle Trust and author of Trout in Dirty Places. He says he wrote the book to address the perception that urban rivers are drains and sources of contagion and disease.
With many people living in towns and cities, Pike says urban fishing requires little equipment and its proximity to houses and places of work provides many advantages to fishing in rural areas.

Pike's local river, the River Wandle in south London, is a tributary of the River Thames and has historically suffered from heavy pollution.
But in 2010, the Environment Agency listed the Wandle as one of the 10 most improved rivers and it now has eel, chub, grayling and trout among the aquatic life in its waters.
Brazilian scientists have discovered the existence of an underground river some 6,000 kilometers (3,720 miles) long running beneath the Amazon River, the Sao Paulo daily O Estado reported Thursday.
The discovery was made possible thanks to research work performed at 241 wells that the Petrobras oil company drilled in the Amazon region in the 1970s while prospecting for crude, according to the study published by the newspaper which was carried out by the National Geophysical Observatory.
The subterranean river runs at a depth of about 4,000 meters (2.5 miles) along a course similar to that of the Amazon, and it has a flow rate calculated at about 3,000 cubic meters (739,000 gallons) per second.
The flow is just 3 percent of that of the Amazon River itself, which has its headwaters in the Peruvian jungle, empties into the Atlantic in northern Brazil and at 6,800 kilometers (about 4,200 miles) is considered to be the world's longest river.
Researchers decided to name the underground river the Hamza, in tribute to the scientist of Indian origin Valiya Mannathal Hamza, who has been studying the region for more than four decades.

A unique opportunity to see, touch and paddle a dugout canoe on the Columbia River is coming to the History Museum of Hood River County Aug. 11 at 10 a.m.
Voyages of Rediscovery, located out of Chewelah, Wash., north of Spokane, specializes in facilitating educational expeditions along the Columbia River and connecting Native American youth to natural and cultural history using their “backyard river,” said Daniel Cassell, an educator with Voyages of Rediscovery.
It took nine months for some 200 students at Wellpinit High School (Spokane Indian Reservation), Inchelium Middle School and the sharpening stone overlooking Kettle Falls (The Confederated Tribes of the Colville Reservation) to create five dugout canoes, two of which are now on display at the Hood River County Historical Museum.
The canoes are all unique, having been made “one woodchip at a time,” said Cassell. The 30-foot vessels were designed to represent the five species of Pacific salmon.
Two more of the canoes are currently making their way up river, having started earlier this month at Astoria and working their way along the Columbia River to Lake Columbia, located in British Columbia, in a trip meant to symbolize salmon returning to the headwaters.
The fifth is a scouting canoe and is not fit for the Columbia River, said Cassell.
The group of six making the journey will be stopping in Hood River Aug. 11 and invite all interested persons and families to the museum to learn about the Voyages of Rediscovery, see a short documentary called “The Power of the Canoe,” and paddle a handmade dugout canoe on the river.
People have been paddling dugout canoes on the Columbia for thousands of years,” said Cassell. “(Those attending) will be participating in a true sense of place activity. It may be their only opportunity in life to do that.”
On December 11, 1997, the world agreed that climate change needed to be tackled. The grandly named United Nations Framework on Climate Change adopted the Kyoto Protocol on that day, and it was eventually ratified by 191 countries. Now it's about to expire with a whimper.
Of the major industrial powers, only the European Union is prepared to continue adhering to the Kyoto pact's provisions on cutting greenhouse gases into 2013. Canada, Russia and Japan have already said they won't. The United States never ratified the agreement. So attention is turning to devising a "Kyoto 2.0."

The Kyoto agreement envisaged binding cuts in emissions by the industrialized world -- but not by rapidly industrializing countries like China and India. They are now the largest and third-largest generator of carbon emissions, respectively, and developing countries account for more than half the world's emissions, according to the International Energy Agency.
